Historic First: Youngest Member of the Class of Letters and Arts
On October 22, 2025, the Plenary Assembly of the Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts elected Marios Joannou Elia as an Ordinary Member in the field of Music Composition.
This election acknowledges his multifaceted artistic and cultural contribution, which includes symphonic and choral works, commemorative creations, and multimedia productions presented internationally by leading institutions such as the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Baden-Baden and Freiburg Symphony Orchestra, the European Youth Orchestra, and the National Orchestra of China.
Elia is the only Cypriot artist to have been honoured by the two highest academic institutions of Cyprus and Greece — with the Excellence Award of the Republic of Cyprus, following the unanimous decision of the Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts, and the Spyros Motsenigos Award of the Academy of Athens.
On December 15, 2025, during the official ceremony at the Presidential Palace, the formal proclamation of his title as Ordinary Member will take place in the presence of the President of the Republic of Cyprus and the Plenary Assembly of the Cyprus Academy.
The Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts constitutes the highest intellectual institution of the Republic of Cyprus in the fields of science, literature and the arts, and brings together the nation’s most distinguished scholars, scientists, and artists.
It is noteworthy that Marios Joannou Elia is the youngest member of the Class of Letters and Arts. The title of Ordinary Member of the Academy constitutes a lifelong distinction.
