Cyprus and the EU designate Elia to the EU Expert Committee, highlighting his European experience and leadership in cultural strategy.
The Deputy Minister of Culture of the Republic of Cyprus, in consultation with the European Commission, has appointed Marios Joannou Elia as the National Expert to represent Cyprus in the EU Expert Committee for the European Capital of Culture 2030.
Elia brings extensive European experience, having served as the youngest ever Artistic Director in the history of the initiative, when he directed Pafos 2017 – European Capital of Culture. He has since acted as an expert and advisor to several European cities in their candidacies, providing guidance on cultural strategy, international cooperation, and artistic vision.
Currently, he continues this work in Næstved, Denmark, contributing to the development of its cultural policies and long-term strategy within the European framework.
His appointment underlines Cyprus’s active role in shaping the future of the European Capital of Culture and reinforces the country’s voice within the EU’s cultural agenda. By drawing on Elia’s artistic and strategic expertise, Cyprus contributes to the wider European discourse on how culture, music, and creativity can foster dialogue, identity, and shared values across Europe.
