Naval Symphony

Part I of «Naval Symphony», «Varyag», is inspired by the Russian cruiser «Varyag» (1899). During the Battle of Chemulpo Bay in 1904, at the outbreak of the Russo-Japanese War, its crew chose to scuttle the ship rather than surrender. The work juxtaposes two emblematic texts: «Varyag» (1904) by Austrian poet Rudolf Greinz, commemorating the courage and stoicism of the cruiser’s crew, and «Amur Waves» by Serafim Popov and Konstantin Vasiliev, associated with the waltz composed by Max Kyuss in Vladivostok in 1903.
